Below, we’ll tell you how to start and complete Chippin’ In, as well as how to make sure you get Johnny Silverhand’s items.
How to Trigger the Chippin’ In Side Job
First, complete the Taperworm quest. To do so, you’ll need to speak to Johnny Silverhand at the end of various main jobs throughout the game:
Automatic Love Transmission Life During Wartime Search and Destroy
At the end of these jobs, there are scripted cutscenes where V will typically feel ill and struggle to walk as Johnny materializes in front of them. These are the conversation triggers that will lead to Tapeworm, which should automatically trigger after Search and Destroy.
Tapeworm is a very short side mission where you speak to Johnny, pass out, and then end up somewhere else. He’ll then guide you to a cache where you can pick up a story item, leave the area, and that’s that. The prompt for Chippin’ In should unlock here as well.
How to Complete the Chippin’ In Sidequest in Cyberpunk 2077
Start the quest by going to Afterlife. Once there, you’ll have to watch several cutscenes with Johnny partying and getting wasted around Night City. Afterward, wait a day (or skip time), and Rogue will call you. She’ll ask you to meet her at Afterlife. Do so, and you’ll eventually follow her to your main mission destination: the Maelstrom camp.
At the camp, make your way to the Data Term computer room on the map, taking out any of the cameras or enemies along the way. There is a single enemy in the room. Take them out, scavenge the room for some good items, and analyze the computer.
In the messages tab, you’ll find an email with the subject line “Ebunike." Read that, and you’ll find out Ebunike is a ship where you’ll find Smasher and Grayson.
Follow the waypoint tracker to Ebunike, again taking out any cameras or enemies along the way.
On the ship, you’ll notice an enemy standing in the middle of a large shipping container. However, there are two other Arasaka assassins hidden nearby, so be careful when taking care of them. It may be difficult to do it stealthily, but if you have the Overheat quick hack, you can slowly take down each of them without being seen.
After taking down those three enemies, head forward. Johnny will note that Grayson is in possession of his gun, the Malorian Arms 3516. Go up the stairs and attack Grayson. He’s a complete pushover and shouldn’t cause you any problems at all. In fact, I didn’t even have to shoot him. I’m not sure if this was a glitch or not, but he immediately doubled over when I confronted him, ending the battle.
Take the gun from Grayson, and you’ll be presented with two options: either let him live or kill him.
If you let him live, he’ll give you an Access Card and tell you that you can use it on a control panel nearby. If you kill him, he’ll simply just drop it and you can pick it up. Of course, he’s not alive to tell you how to use it.
Whatever decision you make, take the Access Card, walk down the stairs from where Grayson was, and climb up the ladder to your left.
Use the Access Card on the control panel to lower a shipping container. Then, directly past the control panel, jump off the ship and head to that shipping container right in front of you. Johnny will materialize, commenting that he thinks he knows what’s inside. It turns out to be his car, the Porsche 911 Turbo.
The car isn’t actually required to finish the side quest, but you might as well grab it. It’s the only time the car is available (if you’re looking for other cars, by chance, we’ve got a guide for that).
Now ride the car to the oilfields, following the objective marker, where Johnny’s physical body was buried. Once you’re out in the oilfields, V will have a heart to heart conversation with Johnny.
And that’s all for the Chippin’ In sidequest in Cyberpunk 2077. Now you know how to get Johnny’s signature gun, the Malorian Arms 3516, as well as his sweet ride, the Porsche 911 Turbo! If you’re looking for more tips on Cyberpunk 2077, consider heading over to our growing guides page.
